October is SIDS Awareness Month (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

The month of October is the time to remember those bedtime basics and remember that safe sleep practices help save lives.

HALO SleepSack in Hospitals

First Candle is an organization partnered with Halo Sleep Sacks that claims that as many as 80-90% of all unexpected infant deaths each year are the result of unsafe sleep practices.  By following safe sleep rules you can help protect your baby from SIDS.

First Candle has many tips for parents regarding safe sleeping.  Some are provided below.

  • Do not put anything soft, loose of fluffy in your baby’s sleep space.  This includes pillows, blankets, comforters, bumper pads, stuffed animals, etc.
  • Use a wearable blanket or other type of sleeper instead of blankets to keep your baby safe and warm.
  • Make sure your baby doesn’t get too warm during sleep.  Use light sleep clothing and keep room temperature at what would be comfortable for a lightly-clothed adult.
  • Educate everyone who cares for your baby about these safe sleep rules!
